TS Calculator (True Shooting Percentage)
Use our true shooting calculator to calculate true shooting percentage (TS%) from points, field goal attempts (FGA), and free throw attempts (FTA). Includes the true shooting formula, what TS% means, and FAQs like the difference between true shooting and eFG%.
What Is True Shooting?
True shooting percentage (TS%) is a basketball efficiency stat that estimates how efficiently a player scores, accounting for two-pointers, three-pointers, and free throws.
Unlike basic field goal percentage, TS% includes the impact of free throws and values three-point scoring properly through the points total.
TS% is useful for comparing scoring efficiency across players with different shot profiles and free throw rates.
True Shooting Formula
True shooting percentage compares points scored to total scoring attempts, where free throws are weighted using a standard factor.
0.44 is a common estimate for how many free throw attempts equal one possession/shot attempt.
TS% is often shown as a percentage (67.8%) or as a decimal (0.678).
How to Calculate True Shooting Percentage
- 1
Enter points scored by the player.
- 2
Enter field goal attempts (FGA).
- 3
Enter free throw attempts (FTA).
- 4
The calculator applies TS% = Points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).
Frequently Asked Questions
Use TS% = Points ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA)).
It measures scoring efficiency by comparing points scored to total scoring attempts, including a weighted contribution from free throws.
It depends on era and league context, but higher TS% means better scoring efficiency. Comparing to league-average TS% for the same season is the best benchmark.
eFG% adjusts field goal percentage to account for three-pointers, but it does not include free throws. TS% includes free throws and uses points scored, so it captures a fuller scoring efficiency picture.
Because free throw attempts don’t always represent a full scoring possession (some are and-ones, some come in pairs or threes). The 0.44 factor is a widely used approximation.
